Friday morning at 7.30 Paul, Mike and I met at Aaron’s home to be fitted with our Team Wombats T-shirts, have a coffee and just say good morning, we needed to find our way to CanD04Kids office on South Terrace Adelaide, 20 minutes before our allocate start time.
Arriving at CanDo, we signed in and received our Passport that had to be stamped at all the checkpoints. Also was given a bag of supplies, food bars, biscuits, drink bottles and assorted bits. Our team photo was taken and we waited for our start time so we could received our first instructions.
The first set of instructions included our photo challenge for the day and the initial destination. The photo challenge included taking a picture of a red Mazda, all our team members with a Coles employee, looking saintly with a saint and enjoying our lunch.
Our first destination was a dance studio, where we had twenty minutes to learn a line dance routine shown via a video, then be video taped performing what we had just learned. Paul decided that twenty days of learning was needed, not twenty minutes and took us off to be taped. During the taping we proceed to do some dosey doe’s , heel toes, some hollering and hooting a couple of body slams, non of it looking like the instruction video just seen.
From the dance studio (not for Team Wombats) we headed out to a boat ramp on Garden Island where Mike and Aaron paddled off in a 2 man canoe to complete a challenge. Paul and I were sent to Port Adelaide, on what we thought was a meet up with Mike and Aaron, were we wrong! As it turned out we needed to find a checkpoint and get our Passport stamped. Mum and Bill had volunteered for the day and were manning the Port Adelaide checkpoint. Passport stamped we headed back to Garden Island boat ramp and picked up Mike and Aaron who had finished their challenge, we then were able to get the clue for the next destination.
Our next destination, a go kart track where we had to get the best time over a series of laps, Aaron is a old hand at kart racing, for Mike, Paul and I it was our first time. It was mentioned later that evening that participating in the Amazing Race had us doing what we all had thought about doing, but never really managed to do, go karting being one of them.
From the go kart track we were off to a park where we had to spin a lucky wheel, and depending on what number came around depended on the treat we received to eat. Aaron’s number came up as some chocolate mouse, Mike and I had to eat some spicy sauce, and Paul was lucky enough to get some hot sauce, which for Paul would not have been hot enough. As I had supplied the vehicle for the day, I was doing the driving. From the go kart track to the park, I guess there are 2 ways to get there, the short way and Paul’s and Mike’s way, the navigators in the back seat.
Next stop was Nando’s where we had a compulsory 30 minute break to enjoy our lunch and take another one of our photo challenges.
Gawler was the next destination, our challenge there was for Mike to do a portrait of Paul on canvas, thinking we should be entering the portrait for an Archibald prize. Aaron needed to make me up, some hair gel and a little make up and I was looking like Charlie Chaplin, with more of an resemblance to Adolf Hitler.
After cleaning the make up off and washing the copious amount of gel out of my hair, thanks to Aaron, we were off to the next destination, Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley. Our task there was to make 2 cakes in cups and cook in the Microwave. All I can say is that I am thankful that Aaron was my partner and not Mike. Aaron’s and my cake was light moist and fluffy, where as Mike’s and Paul’s wasn’t any of those. Thankfully, to pass the task the cake only needed to be made and not taste tested.
Williamstown Oval was the last challenge for the day, Mike and Paul climbed in to a large inflated ball and had a course to complete. Once completed, our knowledge was put to the test, one of them being, naming the marked countries and their capital cities from a map, the other was to look at a couple of photos and depict the recent news event. After completion of the last challenge we were given an envelope to say where our accommodation was.
As our team raised over $3,000 we had VIP status and were lucky enough to be staying at the Novatel Barossa. We arrived there about 5.00 pm freshened up and just relaxed till 6.30 when we had a bus to catch for our meal. Our meal, at the Vine Inn Nurioopta, was a chance to get to know other teams.
Would like to thank CanDo for such a great day, and being so organised. Will be posting day two’s details soon.

Really enjoyed reading about the Amazing Race and the fun you had. We’ll all have to do it again next year, but then we’ll all be a year older too and getting slower. It was great meeting all those lovely people on the teams and it was amazing how much money they raised.
Good to hear you are also moving along with your renovations, don’t know how you fit it all in. Mum
